Top 3 PGA Tournaments

The 2013 PGA Season is Officially underway…

And to say I’m excited is an understatement.  There’s so much to look forward too.

Let’s start by congratulating last weeks Tournament of Champions winner, Dustin Johnson.  He literally battled the elements and pulled out the first victory of the year. He will take his game this week to the Sony Open in Hawaii, the first full field tournament of 2013.

What 3 events are you looking forward to this year?

I know… that’s a tough question to answer. Heck there are four majors and that alone should be in my top 3. This year we have the Presidents Cup and that always provides some excitement. But If I had to narrow it down to three events…

#3 Jack’s Tournament at Muirfield

This course is one of my favorites. It is so beautiful and the bentgrass fairways are so pretty the way they mow them. Also, because it is Jack’s tournament it draws a great field. I also love this course mainly for the par 3’s. The par 3’s are so beautiful and they provide for so much drama like Tiger Wood’s dramatic chip in on the 16th.

#2 Players Championship

The Players Championship is referred to as the 5th major and for good reason. If you want drama then this course provides it. The 16th, 17th, and 18th holes are the best finishing holes in golf. This was a tough choice. The U.S. Open is a major and my countries Open tournament, but shooting even par to win is not exciting. I think tournaments like TPC Scottsdale, where birdies are everywhere, provides more excitement. The U.S. Open is exciting because it is the U.S. Open. I know my students from across the pond will root for the British Open (Open Championship as you call it), but again even par does not call for as much excitement.

#1 The Masters

Hands down the best golf tournament on the planet. Anyone that does not have this at the top of their list needs to re-evaluate that list. Maybe for the northern hemisphere this tournament symbolizes the start of the golf season. Everything leads up to this tournament with the grass turning green and the first major of the year. The course is absolutely beautiful with the Azaleas in full bloom and the course is the same venue every year. There is not a golfer that can’t picture the course. We as spectators know where the pro’s should hit the ball before they actually hit it. We know when they are dead. We can remember the spectacular shots from Jack on 15, Phil’s great 6 iron from the pine straw on 13, Tiger’s chip in on 16 that stopped on the hole and fell in because the Golf God’s made it happen. What about Freddy’s ball staying up out of Ray’s creek short on 12? Heck, just think back to Oosthuizen’s double eagle on Sunday, Phil’s collapse on the fourth hole, and Bubba’s remarkable hooked wedge in the playoff. Sunday alone could have been it’s own tournament. There is so much excitement and the Golf season seems to start here. I for one can’t wait for this tournament each and every year.

What are your top 3 events… and more importantly why?

No 1 : Hayston Pro-am Kirkintilloch Glasgow : Its where I as an amatuer get to play with the pros in a pro-am event and is always when I produce my best golf as we get to test ourself against the guys who know how to play the game

No 2 : Our Winter Leagues annual Ryder Cup which is 14 against 14 and is held annually all over Europe. Almost as exciting as the real thing

No 3 : The Masters : You are right CJ ,you know the grass has started to grow again when the masters is on and you can take all the crazy shot making you see at the masters to your own course

      Kirkyboy,
thanks buddy for your blog post. I think you are the only person to put your own tournaments in there. Very creative! Keep up the good work and let me know how I can help you.

Hi CJ – you missed the one competition that truly tests golfers around the world: The Open :-)

I love your videos and I think you have reduced my handicap by at least 6 or 7 strokes without it costing me a penny!
It’s good value and I would buy but I’m never quite sure what’s being offered – is it possible to see the entire list of courses and then I can determine what percentage I am buying in any given package. Hope that makes sense.
I agree with you on most things but absolutely not on shooting par to win isn’t exciting
What isn’t exiting to me is target gold where the greens are so fast that good or even great shots get penalised

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Derek Dryden,
Thanks Derek for the blog post. You’re referring to the U.S. Open correct? Or were you referring to the British Open? I love this question since you Brits seem so offended by me calling it the British Open and not the Open lol. It is definitely a test watching the Open, but it so depends on the wind, but I can’t put it in my top favorites because I have not been there to play the courses so it is hard for me to realize what shots they are hitting. Plus I hate the coverage being early in the morning and whenever they show the ball flying it skips due to the signal having to bounce through so many satellites. I hope one day to make it across the pond and play those great courses so I will have a much better appreciation of the golf…although I have one question…Do you guys ever have any good weather?

  3. Troy Vayanos says:

Yes CJ, I do live in Australia.

I do love the Australian Open but it just doesn’t get the quality of fields that it used to. If it’s being played at Royal Melbourne it is great but we struggle now to get top players out here like we used to 20 years ago.

    Cheers

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Troy Vayanos,
Thanks Troy for getting back to me. I understand your predicament. With the money in fields and the pay to play appearance fee it has definitely hurt some tournaments. Keep in touch.
      Keep em Long and Straight,
      CJ

  4. Graham says:

1 The Masters – The best course in the world you cannot play.

2 The Open Championship – I always like it when it is brutal, just to see the range of shots played and how inventive players can be.

3 US Open – Always a goot test of golf.

When it is a Ryder Cup year, then that is number 1, it is good to see the team pride and rivalry. Best last Ryder Cup when both Ian Poulter and Bubba Watson roused up the crowd.

    • allen stephenson says:

Graham, you’re 100% correct in your selections!! Allen

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Graham,
Thanks Graham for the blog post. Great picks and yes without a doubt the Ryder Cup is always number 1 except I am too competitive and I hate that we are getting our butts kicked every year.
      Keep em Long and Straight,
      CJ

  5. Troy Vayanos says:

Hard to go past the US Masters at the Augusta National Golf club. It’s the best viewing golf course on television year in year out.

The Cadillac Championship at the TPC Blue Monster at Doral is also very exciting. A lot of famous holes there with a rich history.

The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass is always a great event. It brings out the best players and the golf course is magnificent.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Troy Vayanos,
Thanks Troy for the blog post. Don’t you live in Australia? I thought you did and now I’m surprised no Australian Open. Let me know.

  6. jack b says:

Masters, US Open, British Open. It has to be the best of the majors…and that’s what these are. Nobody will care how many total wins Tiger has, but EVERYBODY will care if he gets to 18 or more MAJORS.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Jack B,
Great point Jack about Tiger although since he owns the most career wins he has some arguing points about best player of all time.
      Keep em Long and Straight,
      CJ

      • Jack B says:

Would you rather have the most playoff wins in history or the most Super Bowl wins in history?

        • CJ Goecks says:

          Jack B,
Thanks Jack for the blog post. I see your point about playoff wins versus tournament wins although I feel they are a bit different. Sure the super bowls and the majors are what we measure golfers by, but there is a difference in talent levels from different decades as well. I’m still betting on Tiger to get one or two majors this year so we will see and this discussion may be moot in a few years. Best wishes.
          Keep em Long and Straight,
          CJ

  7. Tommy Malone says:

#1 The Masters – Golfs Best

#2 Players Championship – Each Por wants to be the Champion of his peers

#3 The Open Championship – The oldest and where the greatest game in the world got it’s start.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Tommy Malone,
Thanks Tommy for the blog post. I cannot say enough about the Masters. I have never been to the tournament and would like to go sometime. I have been fortunate enough to play the course which words cannot describe. Unless you see the course in person you cannot understand the slopes and hills. Needs to be on every golfers bucket list to at least see the course in person.
      Keep em Long and Straight,
      CJ

  8. Lewis Walterhouse says:

    1) I like the Ist tourament of the year Chapions Tour, it means the
start of a new season. 2) The Masters. 3) Either the Presidents Cup or
    the Ryder Cup.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Lewis Walterhouse,
Thanks Lewis for the blog post. Is the Champions tour event before the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii? I wasn’t sure about this? Let me know.

  9. Dave says:

#1 U.S. Open – My all time favorite and open to all golfers. For me, nothing beats the open. I’ve loved this tournament since I was 12 years old.

#2 The Masters – Beauty, excitement…has it all and more. It’s the can’t wait tournament of the year. Darn, it’s only January and we have to wait until April…it’s worth the wait.

#3 The Players – Should be the 4th major. Love this tournament. You’ve got to be tough to win this one. Much more exciting then the PGA.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Dave,
Thanks Dave for the blog post. The Open over the Masters? I’m questioning that one, although I understand your point sir. Thanks for writing in.
      Keep em Long and Straight,
      CJ

      • Dave says:

        Hi CJ,

The question you posed was, “What are the 3 events you are looking forward to this year?” not – “What are the 3 best golf tournaments in the world.” That would be a little, or a lot, different. I have the U.S. Open as my number one tournament that I am looking forward to because I have such a strong emotional linked to that tournament from my youth golf years. That was my FAV!!!

Thanks for all you do CJ, you’re the best.

        • CJ Goecks says:

          Dave,
