Safely out of the bunkers every time…
Bunkers–is there an uglier word in golf?
We’ve all been there…digging your feet in the sand, looking at a steep lip, knowing there’s a snowball’s chance in heck you’re going to get up and down.
But I’ve got news for you today…
In today’s video I’ll reveal a SUREFIRE way to hit out of a bunker every time. And it’s so simple, it’s almost laughable.
Check it out now–and look for more video golf lessons and tips from me this week!

Do you cock your wrists on this longer bunker shot?
Thanks for that instruction
Wynn,
Thanks Wynn for the question. this is a simple basic bunker shot that you control the distance with the speed of your body. With this shot you do not use wrist hinge. The normal bunker shot you will hinge your wrists in all shots and will control your distance by your follow through. Hope this clarifies things for you.

Is this simply a no-hinge swing?
Hi CJ,
I guess you missed my comment.
Hallo C.J.,thank you for your helpful tips and videos. I was trying The sure out method, but I hit The lip of The bunker twice. What shall I do to improve and avoid this?
Thank you for your help. Nancy
Nancy,
thanks Nancy for the blog question. When you state that you hit the lip of the bunker twice did you thin the shot, or was the lip of the bunker close to the ball? The sure out method is a simple method to get the ball out of the bunker from normal situations. If you thinned the ball then just make sure you take some sand. If you simply need to hit the ball higher you will need to open the face and add a bit of wrist hinge in the backswing. You will be moving more towards the normal bunker method if you have my short game DVD. Let me know if this helps Nancy.

Hi CJ, sometimes the is very close to face of the bank and the bank has a vertical face, what happens again in this scenario??
Wilfred,
Thanks Wilfred for the blog post. If the ball is right next to a vertical face you cannot use the sure out method. You must use the normal method that I describe in my mini-clinics and my short game DVD. Unfortunately the sure out is from normal lies and the lie your describing is a lot more difficult.

what the video presented was informative, but how would this work for a fairway bunker and looking at a long shot to green
Larry M,
Thanks Larry for the blog question. This video is for the greenside bunker shot. There will be more videos coming that will discuss the fairway bunker and the long greenside bunker.

Do you hit behind the ball? If so, how much?
Bob Fritsch,
thanks bob for the blog post. You want to hit 2 to 3 inches behind the ball everytime out of the bunker. the specialty spinner shot you may take a bit less, but that is very advanced and will hurt you more times than help you.

Hi CJ
What is the significance of drawing the H in the sand?
Hi CJ,
nice tip to practice my routines in order to perform well and be consistent with my pre-shot preparation, regards

Sure out method works well, but what do you ko if the ball is burried
in the lip?
Phil Falter,
Thanks Phil for the question. In my short game DVD I go into these shots in great detail. In order to be a good bunker player you must be able to hit several different bunker shots. The sure out method is for a good lie in the sand. The normal bunker method is for many different types of shots like the runner, spinner, high shot etc. The buried lie is similar to the normal bunker method but you need to make a few different setup changes and hinge the club quickly on the backswing.

every shot I see is from a bunker with sand in it
I play a public course that has packed dirt so called sand in it
no one shows you how to escape from these bunkers .
how about a tip on this
thanks Bob Silverstein lindenwold south jersey
Bob,
Thanks Bob for the question. Are you relatively new to this site? I have and will continue to do more videos on bunkers as well as hard packed sand. I go into this in great detail in my short game DVD, but I want to help you now also. When playing from hard packed sand you need to move the ball slightly back from normal. You also need to put your weight a bit more on your front foot. from here you need to grip the club extremely tight with the last three fingers of your left hand(righty). Now hinge your wrists in the backswing and hit down hard on the sand and the ball will pop out nicely. You need to understand that the ball will come out quicker than from soft sand so adjust your follow through a bit shorter than what you would normally do from soft sand. Hope this helps and please keep me informed.

CJ:
Have been working hard to apply your ideas and enjoy getting your tips.
Just shot the course record from the senior tees at my course and have cut my handicap by four strokes.
Appreciate your help!

It works! I’ve tried it several times on our home courses in Peoria, IL and we’re here for 2 mos in Mesa AZ. Wound up in bunkers twice yesterday and used this method. It’s so nice to not tense up when attempting to hit out of the sand. I think just knowing this method prevents the ‘beach nerves’ which will foil your attempts before you even hit. Thanks C.J. You’ve been a lifesaver many a time with your instruction videos.
Debbie Jeffries,
Thank you so much Debbie for taking the time to write in the blog and let me know how things are going. You are so very welcome for the tips and I am glad you have become a good bunker player. Keep up the good work and please don’t hesitate to ask any questions.

CJ,
Which club do you use in the video? Lob wedge? Thank you. Andreja
Andreja Jenko,
Thanks Andreja for the question. I typically use a lob wedge in the bunkers unless the sand is super soft or a real long shot. Hope this helps.

I have practice this shot, I get out more offen but sometinme i still leave it in the bunker. question is, do you have the club face open or closed with this shot?
Chris,
Thanks Chris for the question. The clubface is square for the sure out method, but if you practice this shot (draw a line in the sand) and if you hit it fat it is because your not turning your chest through. This will help you get it out every time.

In the ‘sure fire way to get out of the bunker’ lesson, the club face was not mentioned. Should the club face be opened? Also is the alignment square to the pin?
John Nicky,
Thanks John for the question. The clubface should be square and yes the alignment is square to the pin. Keep me informed on how your doing.

CJ, I bought your “Bundle Series” vids about 2 weeks ago & I can certainly say that my confidence and my game improved tremendously.
Whether I’m on the tee, in the fairway, on the fringe or putting…I’m feeling good about hitting the ball. Thanks, Dennis

Would the same wide swing apply here in west tx. Actually wet dirt.thanks jgary!!!
If the sand is wet, actually here in west tex wet dirt–would the wide swing still apply with locked arms. thanks!!!!
Thanks C.J. You’re just a little late getting this out as I REALLY needed that tip on Friday! LOL Was one under until I hit into the sand and when I finished the hole I was 3 over. Ouch!
You Perfect Connection series really helped my game and my back. Thanks for all the tips as they’re appreciated.
Michael
I purchased the perfect connection golf swing which teaches an early wrist cock. Then you recommended in one of your email promotions the Bobby Wilson long drive method. Bobby Wilson teaches a very delayed wrist cock. So since I am taking your advice and these two approaches are totally opposite in form and technique, which do you recommend?
Thanks
