This pigeon-toed putting drill is great for calming your lower body. My question is why don’t people putt like this? Why is it just a drill?

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Ian Middleton,
Thanks Ian for the blog post. The reason people don’t do this is because it looks weird. Think about jack Nicklaus with his elbows spread. he was one of the best putters ever and no one teaches that setup either. If it works for you than I say keep doing it.

  2. Gordon Steen says:

Not quite William. One very important point is ball position in relation to your set up. If the ball is too far back in your stance the putter will come into contact with the ball with an open face. Similarly too far forward it will strike the ball with a closed face. The correct ball position is two inches forward of your sternum. This will encourage square contact along with the correct upward stroke needed to put a good roll on the ball. Hope this helps.

      Tem Miller,
Thanks Tem for the post. Arnie is a great ambassador for the game. We are fortunate to have been able to watch him play.

Hi CJ, I’m a terrible putter and look forward to more putting instructions. I don’t move my bottom half, and I do keep my head down. Where on the ball is the putter supposed to hit? Does it matter if the ball is hit higher or lower? Look forward to your response.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Susan Severino,
Thanks Susan for the blog question. If your a struggling putter than I wouldn’t worry too much about it. To simplify I would say just below center to help. For the technical person the correct position is 10mm up on the ball to produce the perfect roll. Having said that if you think about that than good luck. Make sure your rocking your shoulders and eliminate any wrist motion and you should be fine. Keep in touch.

This seems like a good drill for the full swing for someone with an overactive lower body.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      John L,

  10. DONALD BAINER says:

Go back and watch Arnold Palmer putt. He putted knock-kneed and pigeon-toed. He was pretty good.

    • CJ Goecks says:

      Donald Bainer,
Thanks Donald for the blog post and your right. You look at Arnold and Jack and their styles are not really taught or copied, but in order to be that good you needed to be a great putter.
      Keep em Long and Straight,
      CJ

  11. Troy Vayanos says:

I like those 2 drills CJ. Simple and can be implemented straight away without too much thought process.

Are you going to be covering any drills to stop the putter face opening up particularly on longer distance putts.

    Cheers

    • William Hamilton says:

got a suggestion for this. Find yourself a lazer pointer like they use at business meetings, and use it like your putter to see if your putter backstroke and follow through are a streight line and do not pull off either back or through. This stroke will make the ball track true to your target.
