I Need Your Eyes
“Feel” and “Real” are two completely different things in the golf swing and it is imperative to be able to see what you’re doing to know if you’re working on things correctly. I myself will video my swing to make sure things are correct and sometimes I will ask a member to check my swing at times. I did this recently the other day and asked our club champion to give me his eyes for a couple of seconds.
I told him I haven’t played much lately and needed a refresher on my fundamentals and to check and see if things were what I thought they were. I played the other day and hit a few pulls with my short irons and went to the range to figure out the problem. After about two swings he laid a club on my shoulder line and I was able to tell that my shoulders were pointed well left of my intended target. As we know with alignment this is one of the fundamentals of the golf swing. We also know that shoulders are the most important area of alignment with feet being of least importance. After having my alignment problem pointed out to me I knew how to fix the problem. All I did was grip the club cross-handed (left hand low) and this squared my shoulders to the target. I then kept my shoulders the same and took my normal grip and could instantly feel the difference and knew I would hit the ball at the target. I continued on doing this drill repeatedly before each ball I hit and hit the ball so well and at my target. I thanked the member and ended my practice session. My pull was a simple fix of shoulder alignment and I couldn’t tell without the help of this member.
Sometimes a swing problem is not a swing problem at all, but a simple tune up of your fundamentals. Next time your swing leaves you ask someone you trust to lend their eyes to your swing and see what they say. Try to keep it simple. Don’t go into a full reworking of the golf swing. The Perfect Connection Golf swing has been laid out to you in my videos and tips that you receive daily. You have worked at the swing and have it ingrained now, but always look to the fundamentals first and see if that’s where the problem lies. A simple refresher may turn your game around.

I can’t get loft out of my long irons. My drive is good down the middle put no loft to irons. Keep rollong along the ground very little distance HELP HELP HELP
Joseph Piccirillo,
Thanks Joseph for the question. First let’s talk about your driver distance. Let me know how far you hit your driver and say your seven iron. You may simply be topping the ball or thinning it and thats why your not getting any loft. It could simply be an extremely closed club face. Also what irons are you using exactly that your struggling with (3 iron, 4 iron)? Let me know and I will be glad to help. Please remind me of your problem as I answer a lot of questions each day.

CJ, i have a chipping technique that i learned from a teaching pro a few years back. i have showed it to a couple of people i know just recently and they tell me that they have never seen anyone, pro or amature, chip with this technique, saying “i’m crazy, nobody does that”.i tell them “yes, but it works”. it is like putting with an iron, where you place the shaft vertical, which puts the club on the toe edge and turning the face so it faces your target line, then making a putting stroke. the ball travel distance seems to be more consistent because it likens to tossing a ball instead of hitting it due to the reduced energy transfer from the club to the ball as with a off center hit. can you give any insight to this technique, and why you don’t see hardly anyone using it. you still land the ball within 1 club lenght of the edge on the green.
Richard,
Thanks Richard for the question. the method your talking about I teach also, but for different reasons. the normal chipping method allows you to use wrist hinge which simply blends into pitches. The shot your talking about is called the putt-chip method. This is used for very fast greens and when your really close to the green. I love this shot and it is super simple to use. If I have an amateur struggling with chipping I will teach him this method to get him going initially. Again the reason you don’t see it is you can’t use if from far off the green so if you can practice one method it might be better to spend the time working on the normal chip shot but I think it is a great shot to have in your bag. You will see this shot more around the U.S. Open or at the Masters when green speed is extremely fast.

CJ, i have taken some video of my swing and i see some problems with the start of my downswing. my head is moving toward the target at the start of my downswing causing a small over the top path, it is not bad until i get into the mid to long clubs, then i start to pull my shots. if i could keep my head from moving toward the target,it looks like it would allow my club to drop and go down the line or slightly in to out and that i could really start to hit all my clubs consistently. i can see the problems but don’t know how to fix them.
Thanks Richard
Richard,
Thanks Richard for the info and the comments. To fix your problem place a head cover on your left shoulder at address. When you swing back the head cover will be pinched between your left shoulder and chin. Now try to get your chin and shoulder to separate in the transition. If your head moves with your shoulder the head cover will not fall out. Try this several times and you can even do the pump drill. this drill you take it to the top now slowly pump your arms down with your head staying still and your shoulder leaving your chin. do this three times and on the third time hit the ball but try try re-create the feeling of your arms dropping. Does this make sense? Let me know.

I have a look at my video for a driver swing.I noticed my left arm
is bending L shape. Can you please surgest to me correction please.
Thank you
Norzam Wan Din,
Thanks for the question. This problem that your describing is due to not forming the Letter L with your wrists. When you fail to get wrist hinge than the elbows must bend to try to create power, although this is a poor way to create power. Work on the L to L drill with the irons and let me know if this helps. There are other drills we can work on, but ONLY if the L is correct at halfway back.

Hi CJ
It’s almost three months got ur signature seies video. Certainly the overall game of mine has seen a dramatic improvement. However I need ur help in fixing my silce with the driver(Improved but still three shots out of ten goes to the right). Also many times m heating the ground behind and at times skull.
Shall be greatful for ur valuable tips.
regards
Ramjee
Ramjee,
Thanks for the question Ramjee. Lets start simple and see if this works. Look to your setup first. Make sure you have 60% of your weight on your right side and have your spine tilted to the right. This should promote the draw your wanting. Keep me informed.

CJ,
Had 39 stableford points last sat’day 15th.
Nothing to rave about but got up and down 6 times in 2 and chipped in hole once from off green
This chipping practice is now paying off.
Thanks

David Heffernan,
Heffo way to go buddy. Keep up the good work and thanks for keeping me informed. Best wishes and talk to you soon.

Hi CJ Could you please tell me which hand drives the ball for a lefty
Tom T,
thanks for the question Tom. I have answered this question many times and sorry to say what your asking is not a technical question, but a feel question. It’s different for each player whether your a righty or lefty. You need to practice and figure which one works for you as it may be different for the next guy. Just practice and when you get something that feels good then stick with it and don’t change just because a couple of shots don’t work out. FYI I have had the same swing thought with my driver for 4 years. That doesn’t mean I haven’t hit bad drives, but it’s a good thought for me and I stick with it.

Hi CJ,
I don’t get your fix of the cross hand (left hand low) then take your normal grip and keep your shoulders square to the target? Do you have a video of it? I have your Signature Series DVD’s and have not looked at all of the four DVD’s yet is that fix in one of them?
Earl,
Thanks for your question Earl. At this point I do not have a video of the cross handed drill. I will film this soon to help you understand but simply place your hands like you would normally on the grip. Now switch your hands and put your left hand lower than your right. If you did this properly than your shoulders should feel more closed. Let me know if this helps.

There’s a lot to be said for keeping it simple. We’ve all had those times at the tee when were trying to remember 101 things to do during the swing! Sticking to the fundamentals and getting them right is a great way to steadily improve your game.
This is the thing that always frustrates me. You cannot see yourself swing the club so you cannot see what you are doing wrong. I know what it feels like when I am swinging the club the right way but when things for wrong it is hard to tell. I like to video myself and then look at it on my computer in slow/stop motion to see if I can see where I am messing up. Of course it takes longer to do it this way but unless you have someone you trust that knows what he is doing you cannot be sure the advice you get from someone else is the right advice. Thanks for a great product. I hope the weather gets better soon so I can make sure I am on the right track. Love the daily tips. You can never learn too much.
Bill Brown,
Thanks Bill for the blog post. Finding someone that will give you good advice is sometimes hard. I am here for you to upload your swing to if you need help. Keep in touch.

CJ;
Yes, even the good ones of old had this problem. Ben Hogan in his book which was great by a lot of well known people. He would say he was doing something he thought he felt in the swing and film of him playing showed intirely something different. Some times he was hiding some things he didn’t want other pro’s to learn to be able to beat him. You know how that goes, RIGHT?
Delmar Yennie,
Thanks Del for the post. Good to hear from you again. Hope all is well and keep in touch.

I like the cross hand tip to correct allignment and anxious to try when the snow melts.
I am sorry I must be a bit slow today but I have a question about this alignment drill. Putting the left hand Low on the grip would only
Lower your left shoulder and make your shoulder more level it wouldn’t change the alignment would it? Am I missing something?
Thanks.
Bruce
Bruce Engles,
thanks for the question Bruce. TRy it at home and see if you feel the change. Typically (and in my case) when the right hand is low the shoulders typically get open. Once you put the left hand low notice how the forearm of the left hand is closer to the ball now and this closes the shoulders. Mess with it a bit and I’m sure you will see what I mean. Let me know if your still confused and I will try to explain better.

Hi CJ
Having gone through the DVD’s I notice that you don’t mention ball position. Is this because using the Y position would always indicate that the ball would be in the middle of your stance? If so does this remain constant regardless of which club is being used?
Thanks
Barry
(UK)
Barry Thompson,
Thanks Barry for the question. Your right that it wasn’t in there. I have added it in different videos, but for the shorter irons the ball is in the middle of the stance and moves forward all the way to the driver. The ball position only changes a couple of ball widths however from middle to forward so its not much, but definitely moves forward as the club gets longer. Sorry for any confusion. Let me know if this answers your question and keep in touch.
