Duffnering and Hogan Points (Game)
Congratulations to Jason Dufner!
He played a “Hoganesque” closing round hitting fairways and greens while making solid up and downs.
What I enjoyed most about watching Dufner was the type of golf he played. He is one of the best ball strikers on Tour and he played to his strength.
- - Laying up on Par 5’s
- - Laying up to his yardage on short holes
- - Hitting great iron shots
Brilliant course management, especially when playing with the lead.
Jason’s idol, Ben Hogan, played this style of golf and wore competitors out with his ball striking. In a major championship with the lead it is up to your competitors to make things happen. This style of play is learned and cannot be done without practice.
So today I have a game for you to practice. In fact, there are two high school teams in Texas that play this game frequently and have won state numerous times.
1. Take your score on the hole and add or subtract the following:
a. -1 for fairway hit
b. -1 for green hit
c. -1 for a par (no subtraction for birdies)
d. +1 for bogey
e. +2 for double bogey etc, etc
f. +1 for a three putt
g. (par 5’s you can get -2 if you hit the fairway on tee shot and lay up)
Imagine this scenario:
Player A hits the fairway, hits the green and two putts for a par 4. His score is 4. Now -1 for hitting the fairway, -1 for hitting the green, -1 one for a par, which equals a score of 1 on the hole.
Player B misses the fairway, hits the green and 3 putts for a bogey. His score is a 5. Now -1 for hitting the fairway, + 1 for a 3-putt, and + 1 for the bogey, which equals a score of 6.
You can see in this scenario the game encourages playing smart off the tee, aiming towards the center of the green and avoiding three putts.
Practice this game and I know you will shoot lower scores. And let the term duffnering refer to not slouching, but playing steady smart golf.
See you in the comments.
